“A parody of a book designed to look like a parody of the period. The fussy border around the insane illustrations (by Booth Tarkington) separating the border around the part titles are a nice touch.
“A little while later a huge packing case arrived at Doubleday, Doran, containing the manuscript of Roberts’ first novel. At the weekly editorial conference Russell Doubleday complained that he had been elected to send it since, after all, Booth Tarkington was sponsoring Roberts and had got him to send the novel to DD. I don’t know what kind of report he turned in, but they never regretted publishing…[sic]”
